National Sexuality Education Standards Part One: Intro to Implementation

The quality and content of comprehensive sexuality education varies greatly depending on the state, district, school and even teacher. Four leading national health and education organizations along with Advocates for Youth, Answer and SIECUS, have released the National Sexuality Education Standards: Core Content and Skill K-12 in January 2012. This webinar will provide the background, rationale and process by which the Standards were created and strategies for adoption and implementation for educational and health professionals working on the front lines of sexuality education nationwide.

At the end of the webinar, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the main building blocks of the process by which the National Sexuality Education Standards were created.
  • List the seven key topics and four grade level clusters that scaffold the National Sexuality Education Standards.
  • Compare and contrast the content of the National Sexuality Education Standards with their own state’s sexuality education requirements, if any exist.

National Sexuality Education Standards Part Two: Best Approaches to Utilization

Presented by: Nora Gelperin, M.Ed., Answer; Renee White, Ph.D., HIV Prevention Consultant, Kentucky Department of Education; Bonnie Edmondson, Ph.D., HIV/STD Prevention Consultant, Connecticut State Department of Education

This webinar will examine how individuals, school districts, health agencies and state departments of education can and have utilized the National Sexuality Education Standards to promote, revise and align the sexual health content of student instruction. Using examples from the field, this webinar will engage participants in a robust discussion about how the National Sexuality Education Standards can support local and state efforts to promote and sustain comprehensive sexuality education for our nation’s youth.

At the end of the webinar, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain at least three different ways that health and education professionals can utilize the National Sexuality Education Standards (NSES).
  • Analyze at least three examples of utilization of the NSES by health and education practitioners.
  • Construct at least one way that the NSES could be used in their work to advance health and wellness for our nation’s youth.
