Summary: Presenters will provide real-world applications for addressing this critical and complex issue. Educators, health providers, coaches, youth workers, and parents alike will benefit from this important discussion.

 

Part 1 Objectives:

  • Understand how social marketing can be used to design a behavior change intervention
  • Understand how the Scorecard program works
  • Summarize recommendations for promoting physical activity during school
  • Evaluate state laws related to supporting physical activity in school
  • Identify best practices for providing physical activity opportunities in schoo
  • Recognize the challenges and facilitators to implementing obesity interventions in school settings
  • Predict the potential role of the school nurse in addressing childhood obesity in schools

Presenters will provide real-world applications for addressing this critical and complex issue. Educators, health providers, coaches, youth workers, and parents alike will benefit from this important discussion.

 

Part II Objectives:

  •  Describe use of the socio-ecological model in obesity prevention as described in the Child Health Initiative for Lifelong Eating and Exercise (CHILE)
  •  Describe the Head Start can play in early prevention of obesity
  •  Describe at least three lessons learned from the CHILE project
  •  Describe Baseline Body Mass Index (BMI) values for a five-year longitudinal assessment of factors affecting BMI in K-5 children across 7 schools within one suburban, working class school district
  •  Describe Results of the initial analysis of high BMI (≥85th percentile) scores using student level predicators
  •  Describe Variations in student BMI across elementary schools to further our understanding of the factors that may affect the distribution of    overweight and obesity within a school district
  •   Identify key stakeholders who are in school settings, and their roles specific to childhood overweight and obesity-prevention research
  •  Describe the research findings about stakeholder perceptions on childhood obesity factors, including the range of perceptions from various types of stakeholders
  • Articulate how these research findings relate to practice opportunities in school-based settings and community-based settings
