The American School Health Association annualy honors leaders in school health. Recipients are recognized for outstanding accomplishments in their field or for service to the profession.

William A. Howe Award
The William A. Howe Award, the Association's highest honor, recognizes individuals for outstanding
contributions and distinguished service in
school health.

Presented in memory of William A. Howe, MD, a founder and first president of the Association,
the award acknowledges the recipient's outstanding professional contributions paralleling the aims and objectives of the Association.

ASHA Distinguished Service Awards
Distinguished Service Awards recognize the exemplary contributions of active or retired ASHA members to the Association. Service to the Association includes offices held, committee memberships, and committee chairs. Recipients must be current ASHA members.

Superintendents' School Health Leadership Award
The American School Health Association (ASHA) proudly sponsors an annual award saluting a superintendent who recognizes the connection between student health and academic achievement.

The Supertintendents' School Health Leadership Award, presented by the ASHA Council on Administrative Support for School Health, was established to celebrate superintendents who are committed to meeting the needs of the whole child in a coordinated and comprehensive fashion.

Award nominees are superintendents who demonstrate exemplary commitment to student and staff health within their districts and beyond.
Criteria for Consideration are available to prepare your nomination.
A one-page description of the award also is available.

If you are an ASHA member with first-hand knowledge of a superintendent who meets these criteria, you are invited to submit a nomination by May 15, 2010 to: mbenjamin@ashaweb.org or submit a paper copy to: Marjorie Benjamin,

The 2010 recipient will be announced at the 84th Annual ASHA School Health Conference, October 13 - 16, 2010, in Kansas City, Missouri.

Michael S. Wendt, Superintendent of Schools in the Wilson (NY) Central School District, (pictured above) received the 2009 School Health Leadership Award.

The 2008 Award was presented to Mark E. Doody, Superintendent of Schools in the Hudson Falls (NY) Central School District.


Health Educator of the Year Award
The ASHA Health Educator Section is soliciting nominations for the annual Outstanding Health Educator Award.

From the nominations, the Health Educator Section Award Committee will select the recipient based on the following criteria.

  • The nominee must be an active health educator practicing in a school setting or public health setting as the award is intended to support efforts at the grass roots level. The setting can include government or voluntary health agencies.
     
  • The nominee must have made contributions to the promotion of child health through schools; the nominee does not have to be a classroom teacher.
     
  • The nominee must be actively involved with a professionals organization that emphasizes the importance of school health education.
     

Nominations must include two letters of support, one of which must be from the nominator. Both letters should contain information highlighting the nominee. Letters are limited to one, double-spaced, typewritten page.

Nominations must include a resume, not to exceed four, double-spaced, typewritten pages, consisting of personal information, academic training, employment background, professional association activities, honors, and publications.

Outstanding School Nurse Achievement Award
The ASHA School Nurse Section will present the 2010 Outstanding School Nurse Achievement Award at the 84th Annual ASHA School Health Conference in Kansas City, MO, October 13 - 16, 2010.

From the nominations, the School Nurse Section's Awards Committee will select the recipient based on the following criteria.
 

  • Demonstration of professional competence and expertise, which results in significant contribution to school nursing.
     
  • Demonstration of leadership in school nursing.
     
  • Active involvement in a professional organization that emphasizes school nursing.
     
  • Demonstration of involvement with community health care providers in supporting and promoting school health programs.
     
  • 5 years of full-time experience in school nursing.
     
  • Preference will be given to nominees who are current members of ASHA.
     

Nominations must include a complete resume consisting of contact information, academic preparation, employment background, professional experiences, research (if applicable), community involvement, professional association activities, honors, presentations and publications.

Nominations also must include three letters of recommendation.

Outstanding Researcher Award
The ASHA Research Council is accepting nominations for the 2010 Outstanding Researcher Award.

The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated sustained or outstanding contributions to school health research. The Award is not limited to ASHA members.

To be eligible, the nominee must:

  • Have made contributions in the area of school health research or research involving children and youth for 10 or more years.
     
  • Have published at least 30 peer-reviewed articles pertaining to school health or the health of children and youth of which 20 or more are data-based.
     
  • Have presentated at least 30 presentations pertaining to school health or the health of children and youth of which 20 or more were presented at national or international conferences.
     

To nominate an individual, please submit a letter of recommendation along with the nominee's CV no later than April 2, 2010.
