What type of program formats will ASHA accept proposals for?

School Health: Administration, Coordination, and Leadership
Session proposals should focus on successful and innovative strategies that support healthy schools. Proposals may address innovative strategies or resources to support healthy schools; health and academic achievement; program management; advocacy; fiscal management and funding; policy development and implementation; program evaluation; community collaboration; family engagement; model programs and best practices; addressing culture and diversity; working with school boards and policy makers; and/or sustainability. Proposals may address these issues at the local, state, national, or international levels.

Available Session Formats: 60-minute workshop, 30-minute workshop, or poster presentation

School Health: Programs and Services
Session proposals should focus on the innovative delivery of programs and services that support a Whole Child approach to health and learning in PreK-12 settings. Suggested areas of interest include school nursing services; medical services/school physicians; school-based and linked health centers; school counseling and mental health services; school and community social services; school food services and nutrition services; community-based partnerships for healthcare; Medicaid reimbursement; 504 plans; services to students with disabilities and IDEA; after school programs; managing chronic health conditions in the school setting; employee wellness; mental health promotion and/or legal issues related to the implementation of school-based care systems.

Available Session Formats: 60-minute workshop, 30-minute workshop, or poster presentation

School Health: Research and Emerging Issues
Session proposals should focus on research studies that impact and inform members of the school health team and the delivery of programs, services, and instruction in PreK-12 settings. Proposals may address research findings of local, state, national, or international significance. Emerging issues proposals should focus on research that requires further study or topics that warrant more in depth research. All research presentations must be delivered by an investigator integral to the research.

Available Session Formats: 60-minute workshop, 30-minute workshop, or poster presentation

School Health: Teaching and Learning
Session proposals shall focus on health education and physical education instruction in PreK-12 school settings or the university-based preparation of individuals for school-based health education and physical education instruction. The focus shall be on best practices, research-based programs, and instructional strategies as well as assessment, the use of technology in the classroom, and interdisciplinary learning aligned with the Common Core and National Standards.

Poster Presentation
A static display promoting informal discussion between presenters and colleagues through charts, graphs, diagrams, photographs, and text summaries with presenters standing next to their posters for a hour long poster session event.

Can I submit a Curriculum Vita (CV) in place of a professional resume?
Yes, we do accept Curriculum Vitaes (CVs). Please limit your CV to three pages. Please upload CVs and Resumes for all co-presenters.

What is needed in a professional resume or Curriculum Vita (CV)?

  • Name of presenter with updated contact information
  • Identify your training or expertise on the proposed presentation
  • List your education/degree(s)/certification also including specialty areas that relate to the proposed presentation
  • List your publications that are most relevant to the proposed presentation (up to 10) if any
  • List any academic appointments if any
  • Describe your involvement in relevant professional organizations if any
  • List any awards/honors received if any

Do I have to be an ASHA member to be able to submit an abstract?
No, members and non-members can submit abstracts. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed by each category’s set of criteria. However, registration is required for all presenters and co-presenters.

Why do I need to indicate on my presentation if I am a student?
This allows for more fair reviews to take place taking in consideration of student status and allows ASHA to classify presentations as such.

Will my presentation meet the criteria for Continuing Education credits (CEs)?
The forms have will accurately collect all necessary information for CE determinations. ASHA review committee will determine the final outcome of CEs.

Will ASHA accept submissions after the closing date? 
Due to timeline restrictions, ASHA will not accept any late submissions. The new deadline is now 4/10/2017.

How will I know if my proposal has been accepted?
The lead presenter will be notified by email by late May using the address from the abstract presenter profile. Please ensure that all entries in the submission form are completed accurately. Lead presenters are responsible for communicating with their co-presenter(s) if any.

When will I be notified if my proposal has been accepted?
ASHA will send out all notifications of acceptance by late May by email to lead presenters only. Lead presenters are responsible for communicating with their co-presenter(s) if any. Please list an email address that will be actively checked up to the date of the conference when submitting an application.

I submitted a program last year, do I need to recreate another account?
No, ASHA moved to a new abstract portal for 2016 and we will request that you create a new login and profile in order to submit an abstract.

Accepted Programs

Do I need to confirm receipt of my proposal acceptance letter?
Yes, ASHA will send out proposal acceptance letters by late MayReply back to ASHA by the deadline indicated in the email, confirming your and co-presenters if any, acceptance to present at the conference. If we do not hear back after a follow-up, your presentation may be removed from the schedule.

What if I need to change presenters or co-presenters?
Please communicate any changes immediately to ASHA staff, as this will impact continuing education offerings for your presentation if it is recommended. A deadline will be communicated in the notification email for any changes.

Can I request for specific day/time to present?
No. Due to scheduling logistics, ASHA is unable to accommodate presentation scheduling requests. Please try and make all presenters available to present for the duration of the conference.

Will ASHA offer any presenter discounts, stipends or reimbursements for presenters?
No, ASHA will not be able to offer any financial reimbursements, stipends or discounts for presenters.

Will presenters and co-presenters need to register for the conference?
Yes. All presenters and co-presenters are required to register for the conference. You may register for the full conference or for only the day you are presenting.

Will any of my contact information be published?
All accepted proposals will have their conference summary write up and presenter(s) information gathered from the submitted proposal forms and published in our conference book and mobile application including but not limited to: full name, degrees, certificates, and employer.  Please be sure all information is accurate when you make your submission.

On-site Logistics


Will presenters be provided AV equipment?
Yes. ASHA will provide the standard AV equipment in each room.  This includes a LCD, laptop, a screen, front of room presentation table, and a podium microphone. Anything additional outside this package, can be provided by the hotel upon advanced request for a fee.

Can I bring my own laptop to present?
Yes. You can bring your own laptop to present from.

Will ASHA provide internet connection or wireless (WiFi) connection?
No. There may be a fee for wired/wireless internet connections in conference rooms. Arrangements can be made directly to the hotel.

Will ASHA copy handouts for my presentation?
No. ASHA will not provide copy service. We will provide you with print/copy center information in St. Louis for you to make copies on-site. Please arrange at least 50 copies in advance.
